Superman: Red Son

Superman’s been called “as American as apple pie.”

Sin City

Brutal and breathtaking, Sin City is Robert Rodriguez’s stunningly realized vision of Frank Miller’s pulpy comic books. In the first of three separate but loosely related stories, Marv (Mickey Rourke in heavy makeup) tries to track down the killers of a woman who ended up dead in his bed. In the second story, Dwight’s (Clive Owen) attempt to defend a woman from a brutal abuser goes horribly wrong, and threatens to destroy the uneasy truce among the police, the mob, and the women of Old Town. Finally, an aging cop on his last day on the job (Bruce Willis) rescues a young girl from a kidnapper, but is himself thrown in jail. Years later, he has a chance to save her again. Based on three of Miller’s immensely popular and immensely gritty books (The Hard Goodbye, The Big Fat Kill, and That Yellow Bastard), Sin City is unquestionably the most faithful comic-book-based movie ever made. Each shot looks like a panel from its source material, and director Rodriguez (who refers to it as a “translation” rather than an adaptation) resigned from the Directors Guild so that Miller could share a directing credit. Like the books, it’s almost entirely in stark black and white with some occasional bursts of color (a woman’s red lips, a villain’s yellow face). The backgrounds are entirely digitally generated, yet not self-consciously so, and perfectly capture Miller’s gritty cityscape. And though most of Miller’s copious nudity is absent, the violence is unrelentingly present. That may be the biggest obstacle to viewers who aren’t already fans of the books and who may have been turned off by Kill Bill (whose director, Quentin Tarantino, helmed one scene of Sin City). In addition, it’s a bleak, desperate world in which the heroes are killers, corruption rules, and the women are almost all prostitutes or strippers. But Miller’s stories are riveting, and the huge cast–which also includes Jessica Alba, Jaime King, Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood, Nick Stahl, Michael Clarke Duncan, Devin Aoki, Carla Gugino, and Josh Hartnett–is just about perfect. (Only Bruce Willis and Michael Madsen, while very well-suited to their roles, seem hard to separate from their established screen personas.) In what Rodriguez hopes is the first of a series, Sin City is a spectacular achievement

Wild Thing

Wild Thing (Rina Logan) is the alternate-future daughter of the X-Men’s Wolverine and the rogue mercenary Elektra. Wild Thing first appeared in Marvel Comics’ “MC2″ line of spin offs (specifically, in J2 #5), and soon gained her own title. The run enjoyed some acclaim, but soon fell into the same trap that had consumed the rest of the MC2 line (excluding Spider-Girl, which has managed to hang on to this day) and was cancelled with issue 5.

Firefox 3 Performance Numbers

Moving on from the “let me use that API” conversation and only some real stuff, urandom (thanks for the comment) let us know about the Cybernet News article on Firefox 3 performance.

They are reporting that Firefox 3 is now faster than Safari 3, and is close to WebKit nightly in certain benchmarks. I can just picture Steve coming down on people saying “we market this as the fastest browser on the planet!” which is tough, as noone stays the fastest for ever. It is a race, and I am sure that WebKit and Firefox will be switching spots a lot in recently years.

Again, this is great news for developers. I am running WebKit and Firefox 3b3 and I am really happy with both. For some tasks I choose one over another (e.g. Firebug, Greasemonkey vs. lean and mean).

I’m sure what most of you care the most about are the facts, and so I’ve compiled the results of the SunSpider JavaScript Benchmark test for each of the different browsers. All of the tests below were performed on the same Windows machine, and the Firefox 3 nightly builds definitely came out on top. Here are the results sorted from best to worst (each one is hyperlinked to the full stats):

1. Firefox 3 Nightly (PGO Optimized): 7263.8ms
2. Firefox 3 Nightly (02/25/2008 build): 8219.4ms
3. Opera 9.5.9807 Beta: 10824.0ms

It’s important to know that every time you run the SunSpider Benchmark it conducts each test five times, and the result is the average of the five tests. So it is a rather thorough test, and definitely shows off the speed improvements that Firefox 3 is going to be bringing to the table.

Brendan has said that they are not finished with their performance work for Firefox 3, and I am sure the WebKit team isn’t sitting on their hands…. oh and what about IE 8? It will be fun when that is in the wild to be tested.

Adobe seems to be hard at work at Adobe Creative Suite 4*. In May, they released public betas of CS4 versions of Dreamweaver, Fireworks, and Soundbooth. Existing CS3 owners are able to continue to use these applications beyond the initial 48 hour window.

One of the most obvious changes in the new CS4 applications is the user interface, and this change will also be carried over into the next version of Adobe's Photoshop. This decision is described in detail by Adobe's John Nack. Nack describes how Adobe has been trying to make the interfaces on their apps more consistent and shows off a screenshot of the new Mac Photoshop "application frame". This application frame contains both user interface elements as well as documents themselves. Despite expressing his own initial resistance, Nack explains the advantages to the consolidated window:


- It facilitates N-up (2-up, 3-up, etc.) document layouts that adapt as you adjust the interface. Think "live window tiling"--great for comparing, compositing, etc.
- It makes it easier to move the entire application and its contents, including from one monitor to another.
- It prevents documents from getting obscured by panels (palettes).
- It blocks out the contents of the desktop, minimizing visual clutter. (A number of Mac users have requested this option for many years. I've known quite a few people who open a small blank document, hit F to put it into full-screen mode, and then put it into the background to hide the desktop. Willingness to live with that kind of hack demonstrates some genuine desire for a real fix.)
